Areas of Expertise
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy differs from many other talking therapies in that it aims to help people make deep seated change in personality and emotional development, alongside relieving troubling symptoms.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is widely regarded as an effective evidence-based therapy. It is designed to provide practical strategies to help overcome unhelpful patterns of negative thoughts and behaviours. It is typically a short term therapy between 6 to 12 sessions.
Where appropriate I employ a combination of Psychodynamic and CBT techniques. My experience is that clients benefit from understanding their unconscious motivations and with practical strategies, effect change in their day to day lives more readily.
Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy are essentially interchangeable terms and their theories are the bedrock of my practice.
Psychoanalysis started with the discoveries of Sigmund Freud a century ago, but its methods have changed and developed a great deal since then. It has the most developed theoretical base of all the talking treatments and has had a significant influence on all talking therapies. The huge contribution made by CG Jung to the field has also been a significant influence in my practice.
Psychoanalytic based treatments are evidence-based forms of therapy which can effectively treat emotional problems and a wide range of mental health conditions such as depression, eating disorders, addictions, ADHD, phobias and anxiety.
Psychoanalytic therapies address underlying issues and causes, often from your past, which may be concerning you, or affecting your relationships with others. In your sessions you will be encouraged to talk freely and to look deeper into your problems and worries. Some seek help for underlying feelings of depression or anxiety, difficulties in concentrating, dissatisfaction in work or in marriage, or for an inability to form satisfactory relationships. It may benefit anyone.
It can contribute significantly to a person’s mental and physical health, to their sense of well-being and to their ability to live a more fulfilling life.
It is usual for sessions to be at a regular time every week and you may be in treatment for several months, depending on the scope and depth of your treatment.
Sessions are generally yours to use as you wish, but from time to time I may reflect on what you have said in a way that tries to help make sense of what's going on. Making connections between various parts of your story offers perspectives that you may not have considered and will therefore encourage you to explore issues more deeply.
In addition to this, where appropriate I offer strategies from CBT to assimilate the insight gained in the psychodynamic approach. This combination in my experience is both highly effective and more consistent with the demands of modern life where few have the luxury of time for a lengthy analysis.
An initial session can be arrange, usually within a few days. Please contact me here.
